The Continent of Aelland is approximately 850 miles wide by 700 miles long. Its pre history involves a fiery path that still continues throughout the continent. It inhabits the northern hemisphere of the planet and tends to have harsh winters in the northern most parts of the continent. As the mountains are geographically fairly new, they usually are fairly steep, and most commonly black or dark brown due to their volcanic heritage.
Aelland’s geography is extremely mountain filled, thanks to it’s volcanic past, and still volcanic present. Near the center of Aelland is the Briarwood Caldera, a fertile depression which supports a strong forest and a few geysers.
To the west, between the caldera and the Mistfire Mountain range is a fertile section of land, home to a tough breed of wheat and plains that support a great range of beasts and monsters. The Mistfire range acts as a protective tower against the raging storms that can come from the far north. They also contain Mistfire Mountain, who constantly belches lava down it’s western and northern side, expanding the coastline by a few feet each year.
To the north of the caldera lies the Peat Bogs. During the winter these bogs lie under several feet of snow, and during the summer the peat is thick enough that it can be harvested for bedding and cooking.
To the south is Ael Lake. This lake is crystal clear down 30 feet and no one has determined how far down it goes. The lake has been known to be dangerous due to the toxic gasses that can diffuse into its water from below.
Further south is the Silverback Mountains. Rich with veins of silver and gold, the mining tunnels start at Silver Springs, and wind for miles beneath the surface. It’s also one of the few ranges on the continent that contains granite.
To the east of the range is the Razortree Woods. The trees are famous for their high heat and hardness, but also equally famous for their razor sharp spines. These woods are so thick and hazardous that only a few game trails exist through them, and the only way to get commerce through to the eastern half of the continent is through the Ael River.
To the east of the caldera is the Skyreach range. This range contains the highest mountain, the Icecap mountain. Bordering it on the east is the Dragonsblood Desert. This desert is the color of blood, and dragons happen to live in the Dragonsfang Mountains bordering it’s eastern most border.
The Dragonsfang mountain range is the largest mountain range in all Aelland. It also happens to contain the largest of beasts, the dragons. Most settlements stay away from the dragons’ traditional hunting ranges. Other settlements on the eastern side of the mountains have either braved the scaled beasts and lived brazenly in the grounds, or have worked out an arrangement that the dragons can take some of their stock provided that the dragons leave the rest of the herd alone.
Off the south east corner of the continent is an island called Latem. This island is famous for its native population, a primitive tribes people that had made a pact with demons. Although it is thought the tribes people had been wiped out, there is a strong belief that the bloodline lives on.
